What is the blending obligation?

The blending obligation is a regulation introduced by the Dutch government in 2007 to promote the sustainability of energy production. Currently, it mandates that a portion of gasoline and diesel must come from renewable sources. Starting in 2026, energy suppliers will also be required to blend green gas. This will normally increase annually to a 20% of gas supplied by 2030.

Why is the blending requirement important

The purpose of the blending obligation is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the climate goals of the Netherlands and the European Union. Mandating a higher mix of renewable energy sources will accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

What does this mean for companies in the industry

If the gas blending requirement is implemented, companies involved in biogas production, such as farmers and our organization, will play a greater role in the energy transition. Demand for green gas is expected to increase, leading to higher revenues for green gas producers and boosting the sector.

Outlook and impact on the future

While the details of the blending obligation are not yet final, it is clear that this measure could have a significant impact on the market. Companies in the industry must be prepared for the potential changes and actively work to reap the benefits of this obligation.
