Biolectric transforms manure into renewable energy, empowering farms for sustainability, efficiency, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Transforming farm waste into energy- The impact of on-farm biogas systems

Powering farms with renewable energy from manure since 2009

Biolectric is revolutionizing how dairy and pig farms manage energy consumption by converting manure into a sustainable energy source. Presently, over 350 anaerobic digesters are operational, with two additional units produced weekly.

Joseph Fayolle, the UK manager for Biolectric, explains, “Our technology captures methane effectively, turning it into electricity and heat via an engine, thus preventing its release into the atmosphere and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With our highly automated systems and user-friendly interface, farmers can save time and focus more on farming.”

Post-Covid-19 and Brexit, there was a noticeable decline in new installations. However, the last year has seen a resurgence in interest and purchases due to the rising costs and variability of electricity supplies. Additionally, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from manure has become increasingly important to milk consumers and dairy cooperatives alike.

Around-the-clock energy from slurry

Biolectric’s systems process fresh slurry hourly, maximizing its energy potential. This allows farms, requiring at least 60 cows, to achieve near-complete energy independence with electricity outputs ranging from 11 to 74 kW per hour. The system also provides heat for farm use, reduces fertilizer imports, and ensures continuous renewable energy production.

Smart manure management

The recent introduction of the SMART algorithm allows farmers to optimize their energy usage based on farm activity and electricity prices. This feature transforms biogas from manure into a practical energy reserve, acting as a cost-effective energy buffer.

Dedication to service and automation

Joseph Fayolle reflects on the company’s journey, emphasizing the importance of impeccable service. “When Biolectric re-entered the UK market in 2022, we established service hubs equipped with spare parts in the North and South-West to ensure rapid response times and maintain operational reliability.”

The service subscription guarantees system uptime for 15 years, allowing farmers to focus primarily on their core activities—crops and livestock—while Biolectric continues to enhance system automation and reliability.

Success stories from the UK

Knott Oak Dairy Farm, part of the Dillington Estate in Somerset, has seen a 50% reduction in electricity consumption since installing their system in mid-2019. Farm manager Ollie Blackburn notes, “The system operates autonomously, and a quick daily check via our online app is all it takes. The proactive maintenance approach has fostered a trusting relationship with Biolectric.”

At Beech Grove Farm, co-owner Edward Goodall utilizes a 33 kW system to power farm operations and heat the on-site café. “With additional solar panels and a wind turbine, the AD plant’s efficiency clearly outshines other renewable options,” says Edward.

Joseph Fayolle concludes, “We are actively collaborating with various companies and associations like the ADBA to increase awareness and adoption of small on-farm AD systems in the UK.”
